United await UEFA decision over Rooney stamp

Manchester United could be without Wayne Rooney for their Round of 16 tie if UEFA decide to take action after his tackle on Aalbord's Kasper Risgard in Wednesday night's Champions League tie.

The striker has come in for criticism after a robust performance which also saw Michael Jakobsen hit with a heavy challenge. He appeared to stamp on Risgard who stayed down in pain after the incident.

The England striker, whose second-half equaliser secured the point which ensured United qualified for the knockout stages as Group E winners, was accused by Kasper Risgard of making a dangerous tackle.
The incident was similar to the striker's clash with Ricardo Carvalho in England's World Cup quarter-final against Portugal which led to Rooney being sent off and also becoming the target of condemnation from last night's apparent victim.

If UEFA decide to take action, Rooney could be banned for the start of the knockout stages which begin in February.

Rooney made light of the incidents – "it's football, it's a physical game," he offered – and so did his manager who implied that Rooney had been deliberately needled, and countered that Aalborg's Jeppe Curth might have been dismissed for the challenge on Carlos Tevez which earned him a booking.
