Officially Edwin van der sar declared his intention to retire from football, this is van der sar expressed through his agent. 

Van der sar stressed that the main reason he retired from football is a family of factors, not of the age factor. His wife had a stroke, Van der sar feel his wife  more in need of attention.

"Age is not a problem for me, I'm still fit. My wife had a stroke, he needs more attention." said Van der sar.
