Justin Bieber’s YouTube Discovery
The teen singing sensation was discovered on the popular video sharing website, YouTube. It all started when Justin Bieber recorded a video of himself singing for his friends and posted it on YouTube after finding out that the files were too large to send by email. The video started to become more popular and it gained more views than he had friends. Justin continued posting dozens of homemade videos on YouTube in 2007, where the talented singer covered various songs from artists such as Usher, Ne-Yo and Stevie Wonder. Justin’s videos gained more than 10,000,000 views which led to many offers from managers impressed by his talent.
Justin’s first offer was from Maury Povich, to appear on his show. However, Justin’s mother turned down the offer due to the fact that she was sceptical of the phone call which she thought was just a prank.
However, the persistence of manager Scooter Braun, former marketing executive of So So Def finally paid off when Justin’s mother accepted his offer. Justin met his idol Usher during his first studio visit in Atlanta. Justin approached Usher and asked if he would like to hear him sing a few of his songs. However, Usher turned him down. After a week of discovering Justin’s videos online, Usher realised that he was in the company of a future superstar. He flew Justin back to Atlanta and got him to sing for his people and offered to sign him to the major label.
In October 2008, Justin Bieber was officially signed to Island Records. He released his debut album, My World which quickly became popular due to his large internet fan base.
